Period: December 2018 – August 2020
Client/Partner: CEFA Kenya NGO

This research was conducted in the framework of the project APRIRE, funded by the Italian Agency for Development and Cooperation in Kenya, and led by the Italian NGO “Fondazione l’Albero della Vita”. The objective of this project was to contribute to the promotion and protection of vulnerable children’s rights and the rights of children in conflict with the law in Kenya, by strengthening the child justice system through the active participation of Government institutions, civil society organizations and private sector, in accordance with relevant international standards.

With the project partner CEFA Kenya NGO, I developed training modules on diversion and on restorative justice with children, for training to the judiciary in Kenya.

I also conducted a research on diversion and on restorative justice applied with children, researching about South Africa while analysing and consolidating data and research reports produced by national researchers in other six African countries. As lead consultant in a team of researchers, I had the task to harmonise and consolidate data on diversion and restorative justice with children, collected in Burundi, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Uganda, Somalia and Kenya.

Led by “Fondazione l’Albero della Vita”, in partnership with CEFA Kenya NGO, Care Alliance, Collective Community Action, Institute “Don Calabria”, Challenged Network of Kenya and GRT Kenya, and juvenile justice state actors including Department of Children Services, Probation and Aftercare Services, National Police Service, Directorate of Public Prosecution, Judiciary and the Kenya Prisons Service.
