In December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted its Child Rights Resolution (A/RES/69/157), inviting the United Nations Secretary-General (SG) to commission an in-depth global study on children deprived of liberty. On 25 October 2016, the Secretary General welcomed the appointment of Professor Manfred Nowak as Independent Expert to lead the Study that, for the first time, collected data about the deprivation of liberty of children across the globe, in six main domains: in the administration of justice; in prisons with their primary caregivers; in detention for migration related reasons; in care Institutions; in the context of armed conflict and on national security grounds.

I have been part of the team leading the research and drafting of chapter 5 – Children deprived of liberty in the Administration of Justice – at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights/University of Vienna, together with Moritz Birk, Helmut Sax and Gerrit Zach. Throughout this challenging but profoundly rewarding endeavour, I substantially contributed to the research, drafting and compilation of additional contirbutions for the chapter.
I presented about the Global Study in several occasions and participated in the regional consultation conducted in Tunis in November 2018 and in the final experts meeting held in Venice in March 2019.
