PROJECT PRAESIDIUM

Period: August 2014 – April 2015
Client/Partner: Save the Children Italy

This project, funded by the Italian Ministry of the Interior, aimed at strengthening the management capacity for ‘mixed migration flows’ arriving by sea, particularly to Lampedusa and other coastal areas in southern Italy.

As Monitoring Officer for Save the Children Italy, I was in charge of the monitoring the living conditions of unaccompanied migrant children in reception centres across Sicily.

I visited and collected information from more than hundred reception centres spread across the 9 provinces in Sicily, interviewing children, centres’ managers and workers, and conducting thorough visits of the structures.

This activity of monitoring led to the alerting of public authorities about the living conditions and situations in a number of centres; after further investigation by the competent authorities some of these centres were eventually closed.
